Warner and Smith had earlier stepped down from their leadership positions at SunRisers and Rajasthan Royals respectively, with the Jaipur-based franchise appointing Ajinkya Rahane as their skipper in place of the Australia captain.
Warner’s absence is likely to hurt Sunrisers Hyderabad. He was an inspirational leader and was also the Orange cap holder(leading run-scorer) for his side with 641 runs in last IPL season.
The New Zealand skipper Williamson made his IPL debut in 2015 against Chennai Super Kings and till now he played 15 games, scoring 411 runs with a strike rate of 129.25 including three fifties, at an average of 31.62.
He said that it is an ‘exciting opportunity’ and he is looking forward to it.
I’ve accepted the role to stand in as captain for this season. It’s an exciting opportunity with a talented group of players. I look forward to the challenges ahead.
